Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/hkgbradio
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2S6lRM...
Lonely Christmas

Repeat #*

The illusion of "home" in HK

Next time you are tempted to buy an overpriced, overcrowded, over-packaged 500 sq. ft. apartment as your "home", remember this:

Perpetuating the illusion of "home" is big business for real estate developers. They have stretched the boundaries of the private house to absorb the public in a collective realm. The private sector clearly manipulates the social patterns of Hong Kong, making the one child family a model for sophisticated living. The fashionable vertical living environment, with its cloned family stereotype, functions as a mechanism of consumer society offering a standard product with remarkable packaging to justify its exorbitant price. Insufficient land and mass production are "real" real estate issues.

It is a collective fantasy to imprison us in a pretty dream of a "safe", "sweet", and "warm" home. If such a dream can be purchased with 100 thousand HK dollar downpayment, and several thousand monthly mortgage until retirement, how much does a "dream" worth?

Upgrading 13' aluminum macbook (late 2008 model) II

This post is the sequel of upgrading the hardware of my 13' aluminum macbook (late 2008 model). The last post is on the installation of new ssd hard drive and the cloning of data. The new Mushkin 4Gb RAM just arrived by the door today. Can't wait to dig in:
To change the RAM, you need to open the case by removing the 8 philips-head screws on the circumference of the aluminum case

 after the case is removed
the green slates are the RAM
Remove the first piece of RAM by pressing the slots on both sides. Take out the second piece in the same way
the new RAM to be installed
 the backcover
put the case and screws back
the good thing with the 2008 13' aluminum macbook is that there are basic instruction manuals on the back of the case covering the battery and HD. The diagrams from left to right show the ways to 1) remove the battery; 2) remove the HD; 3) remove the RAM. Very pragmatic guidelines for hardware upgrade DIY

Want to know how the combination of 128Gb SSD drive and 4Gb RAM fare in boot test? It took around 27 second to boot the OS + running 3 programs on the startup manual. Not too bad for a 3-year-old laptop. Cost? I spent $219.99 on HD and $47.99 on RAM (free shipping and no tax off Amazon), and $6 on a husky 8-in-1 torx screwdriver set, totaled at $271.98 to perform this upgrade. A bit expensive but a great lift to facilitate the processing time. Think about how much time you spend each day staring at the monitor while running multiple programs. Less frustration and less cursing at the computer comes at <$300 is a good deal for me.

Upgrading 13' aluminum macbook (late 2008 model) I

After some research on Youtube and macforum, I decided it's time to upgrade the hardware in my 13' aluminum Macbook (late 2008 model). I ordered Kingston SSDnow V series 128 Gb hard drive and Mushkin 4Gb RAM on Amazon 2 days ago. The hard drive arrived yesterday (which is AMAZINGLY fast), so this post will focus on the installation of the hard drive and I shall continue the part on RAM as soon as I pick them up from mail.

With the new release of Kingston V+ series and bigger capacity (256 Gb or above), why don't I choose the latest version and go for the V series? Because my laptop is almost 3 years old now, I foresee some compatibility problems with SATA III interface. V series is still using SATA II interface which I know is compatible with my mb according the spec laid out on apple.com. For those of you who own a mbp released in 2010 or later, SATA III should run just fine.

                  Ready to upgrade!

Front cover

Backcover

You need 00' Phillips screwdriver (yellow) + torx T6 screwdriver (husky 8-in-1 set costs ~$6@home depot) for this task

Inside the box: hard disk, a cloning CD, USB cable, hard disk case
For the late-2008 mb, you don't need to open the case to change the hard drive. Unhook a lever on the back, the hard drive sits next to the battery. Use 00' Philips screwdriver to loosen the bar which holds the hard drive in place

Next unhook the cable on the side.

Take out the hard drive. There are 2 torx T-6 screws on each side. Use torx T-6 screwdriver to remove the screws
Put the 4 T-6 screws on the new hard drive and place it back on the hard drive slot. Connect the cable and the holding bar.

The next step is to transfer all the data from the old hard drive to the new one. I bought this Kingston upgrade kit (instead of OCZ vertex 2 hard drive) because it comes with a cloning disk. I assumed the disk can help me clone the data without the need to re-install the OS. I was wrong. The cloning disk only works on windows. After several failed trials, I realized that I need to follow the conventional way to backup (using time machine) -> verify new hard drive (disk utility, select new drive, then verify) -> reinstall snow leopard. I followed more or less the same step as shown in this youtube video, from 4:18 onwards to re-boot the computer.

Done! It took 24 second to boot the system. It's not a huge improvement because I'm still using 2Gb RAM. I will run another test once I upgrade to 4Gb RAM.

A conversation with a co-learner

I came out of a lunch meeting with a fellow doctoral student in our program. I'd say she is one of the very few people (among the few folks in this program) whom I could maybe call friends. She was trying to gather data for her second year project. She asked for my help. My pleasure.

I am not being judgmental. I listened to her project description about how "responsible innovation" is conceived and the personal, social, cultural, psychological factors that contribute to the intricate imageries of "responsibility" and "innovation". She asked me if I can email her my draft for the lab study on the social consensus and categorization of data. It's not that I don't want to share my story with her. But what is the intention? How is it relevant to what she is doing? "Responsible innovation" seems to me more relevant to sociology of institutional management or sociology of business/technology than anthropology of science. Then she said it is to provide a foundational base for her narratives on "responsible innovation". Basically she wants to borrow my (unfinished and unpublished) stuff and get credit without her own hardwork. That's how I interpreted it.

The most horrible thing is that she is not listening. I was trying to be helpful rather than scornful when I suggested that she should read Donna Haraway's "Situated Knowledge" piece as the last part of Haraway's article asserted the theoretical significance of local standpoint in allocation of responsibility. To this she speedily said that time scarcity forbade her reading everything related to the project. That moment I understand Tillman's and Maienschein's admonition on the importance of being earnest and non-defensive. It is clear that she simply does not respect my credibility and contribution. There is no way but to walk away after your sincere contribution was dismissed unreflexively.

Thank you, co-learner. This little role-play exercise sharpens my intellectual and reflexive hone. I should remember not to repeat her mistake of not listening to academic advice (keep your laziness and dyslexia to yourself, how long does it take to read "Situated Knowledge" anyway?). The danger of detachment from scholarship is that ultimately it kills not just your academic competence but what makes you human.

pick a stand

There are times when I regret my aloofness to others. My excessive pride and declaration of independence in confrontations lead to unnecessary deadlock and alienation. I wish I could take my words back if I was given a do-over.

My recent breakup with a friend is NOT one of these moments. A friend of mine in Tempe was furious about my unwillingness to join him for a pre-arranged Chinese new year dinner. So he stopped contacting me and I don't feel obliged to contact him anyway. And there we were, not on the speaking or blinking terms.

Two weeks ago, I seized the opportunity of returning his stuff to write him a letter–not an apologetic letter, more like a greeting card, summarizing our past friendship and wishing him all the best. I was not looking for a reply. Nor was I trying to mend things with him. We did not have anything in common. He was always trying to feed me with his religious sermon or ultra-conservative political views. My view was not respected. It'd be good if I could be a bigger person and accommodate the antagonism. But I am a human being after all. I don't find anything in his friendship worth keeping or saving. Why bother? I may have been rude to him before only because I don't find anything interesting or attractive in what he can offer. Confucius is right in saying "do not attempt to work with people whose way is not your way."

The funny thing is that he ended the reply by hinting that he refused to accompany me in case I wrote the letter because I am lonely. Was I expecting anything in return? I simply feel that it's awkward that we did not even greet each other now. I never thought or wanted things to return to where they were. But it doesn't mean we have to turn into strangers. I thought I was ahead of myself, seems like he is the one who's ahead of himself!

Never stay in a relationship in which you cannot find any commonality. Complementarity and compromise are not the same things. You can compromise your self-absorbedness but not your belief and strength. Pick a stand–even if it means standing alone. I'd rather stand by myself than being shoveled in a crowd of ignorant loudmouth.

Lady Raine and Roissy

Partly out of curiosity, partly boredom and jealousy (by the no. of followers and visitors), I was clicking Roissy at DC quite often in the past couple days. Then yesterday I discovered that the real identity of Roissy was exposed by another popular blogger “Lady Raine” with pictures, real name, work address, home address etc a year ago. This marks the beginning of the night-long marathon of tracing blog posts on Roissy and LR respectively.

LR is more sane and seems to be an intelligent woman. She has as many followers as Roissy. Although what she preaches seem reasonable and fair to me: e.g. relationship is about mutual respect and trust, not about gaming, seduction, hedonism, anti-feminism, self-deprivation, and above all, pretending to be be someone or something you are not just to get laid. A headcount of sexual partners is a poor measure of the likelihood of spiritual union, which is what marriage is ultimately about. LR is also familiar with the common mistakes female make in dating, and what drive men away. She is right: reduce your antagonism and animosity on other hot sisters because verbal attack does not make you look attractive, only pathetic and unconfident. What men and women both seek in a relationship, as LR rightly landed, is FEELING good–––well, in the modern circumstances––I concur. It used to be about a commitment, a set of outer-worldly belief, a socially-mandatory arrangement. These pre-outlined, non-negotiable marriage rituals deprive people of sexual freedom and existential autonomy, but human beings are so corrupted that these arrangements sometimes are necessary to hold our fallible society together. As time goes by, since everything is corruptible, these social norms become unaccepted as they are becomingly more unbearable to most people. Coupled with the modern invention of revolutionary (and destructive) ideas of human-centrality, existential matters become the exclusive concerns. The natural consequence is that nuptiality is not a holy matrimony anymore, but a match of two bloated, over-confident selves in an overtimed competition of whose groin is more blessed, and whose attractiveness is the spotlight.

This is why I don’t believe in the doctrine of “the pursuit of happiness”. If happiness is the goal of existence, and if marriage is about getting access to a lifetime share of happiness, it follows that marriage is about feeling as happy as possible, rather than a mutual agreement to opt for something higher. Is it possible that both parties can feel happy if they work hard to put each other’s happiness above their own? This goes back to the old proposal advice, “propose to your girl if you are ready to put her before yourself”. I don’t dismiss the possibility of such an all-too-good-to-be-true deal. But what is the basis of this altruistic bond? Your another half is not related to you. You might think he/she is your soulmate and the two of you might share a long history. But chemistry is inexplicable, and history is not anticipatory. Unless there is an external purpose (I’m not getting religious here), a common set of belief in the mission of life that are shared by the marriageable couples, a marriage based on nothing but “chemistry” and love is doomed from the very beginning.

Realizing an external purpose in life is not the same as retrograde religious fundamentalist. It does not need to be either God or nothing. It is about dedicating yourself to something bigger than your hormonal feeling and earthly existence. It is the recognition that your existence is not independent of the social forces and historical contingencies. It is the acknowledgement that your life is and will continue to be a part of the larger cultural, social, political conventions and currents of our days.

In sum, marriage is important NOT because you are in need of

(for women)
a meal ticket,
a medical insurance,
a plus-one for escort,
an admirer of you while still in shape
an emotional comforter

(for men)
a f**kable buddy,
a housekeeper, a cook, a maid
a legal partner to show to your boss that you are stable and mature
a fertile uterus to sow your wild oats
an hourglass figure to look at

These are the material benefits that may or may not come with a marriage, but if one or all of these reasons are the only determinant of a relationship, this is not going to work eventually.

The End of Man

It is a hotly debated topic these days, the one about the reversed feminist regime of our age–“The End of Man.”The Atlantic has a special column on this disputed topic that seemingly disrupted if not disturbed your normative perception of gender dynamics and its societal implications.

“The End of Man” draws social indicators from a variety of sources from the increased desirability of baby girls, more effective managerial styles and skills of female managers, and disproportionate over-achievement of female college graduates to support her argument that men is in a crisis of becoming underdogs.

Wells, seems to me this assessment is pretty biased. The coming of age of female inroad into education and professional career does not necessarily imply a decline of men, not unless you assume gender segregation as the only stratifying unit. Race and nationality complicates the picture. Women as a group fare better than men, but women is not a unitary, undifferentiated group. What about the 18-year-old single mum waiting in line for welfare service? Does she fare better than the 35-year-old bachelor with a professional career? Is it meaningful and fair to use gender as a watershed marker?

end-of-men-wide.jpg

Perhaps there are reasons to take this over-generalized pattern more seriously as a social warning, as my friend who sent me the article insisted. Well I am not so sure about this caveat. I am skeptical because gendered symbols of our time cannot be rigorously ascertained without comparison with the past. It is easy to assume that everything that happen right in front of us at this moment as we see it is unique and unparalleled, while it is actually our ignorance of the cosmic vastness and our over-celebrated dignity that we are seeing.

So I checked some sources on the changing gender wrestling in the US and it appears that Arthur Schlesinger Jr. wrote an essay titled "The Crisis of American Masculinity" in 1958, describing a parallel sign of emasculation that he observed in the postwar America where "women are marching toward expanding their domestic forces and seizing domains likes a conquering army, while men, more and more on the defensive, are hardly able to hold their own and gratefully accept assignments from their new rulers." The military narrative in the late 50s is astonishing but not quite alien to a non-resident alien in the 21st century. The fear of emasculation, the presumption of male supremacy, the heroic virility in the inscription of manhood are familiarized by the present generations.

So back to the original proposition, I guess I'm not sure if the effeminate symptom of our time does not carry any remnants from the past, if it was ever such an ubiquitous, trans-sectorial issue occurring at all social fronts.

Pilot

Journal of East Asian Science, Technology and Society(EASTS) 最新一期找到一篇有關19世紀European naturalists 和Indo-European indigenous people 的文化交匯和indigenous herbal medicine產生的文章。
John Anner "Beyond Identity Politics: Emerging Civil Movements in the US"的第一章,進而查看最近一期的Signs,全是有關reproductive technology的。
